3D defeats EG in PanAm opener
July 13, 2006 at 3:46PM AEST

Did 3D simply play that well or was Canadian EG just that bad?

It may be a question that plagues both teams tonight. With the important American 3D versus Brazilian mibr match tomorrow and semi-final games, both teams will be trying to figure out what is myth and what is fact.

For 3D, they walked away with a 16-3 blowout, 25-5 overall. The Canadians never really got started and were dominated from the opening pistol round. 3D rushed long A and was able to solidly hold the bomb plant to win the pistol round.

Even with the coveted pistol round win, the match was far from a certainty for 3D. The doubt that might have been left disappeared when Josh Sievers scored a four frag round in the first gun round, 4th overall. Three of his frags came within seconds of each other.

“It didn’t seem like they were hitting their shots,” said Sievers, “That fourth round really proved it, they just didn’t hit me.”

EG finally won its first round in the sixth after falling behind 5-0. EG’s star player, Matt Stevenson, scored a three frag round while defending the catwalk to enable them to pick up the round. Beyond that round his and all of EG’s performance were terrible, especially defending the catwalk.

Almost like a fourth quarter drive in NFL where one team is far ahead and only needs to take time off of the clock, 3D just kept running the same strategy over and over and EG knew it was coming. NFL teams will run the ball over and over just hoping to get first downs. 3D just kept running split bombsite A rushes or just all out catwalk attacks. EG could not respond.

A lot of the focus coming into the tournament is on Danny “fRoD” Montaner. His "step in" status for 3D, away from his contracted team Complexity, has sparked a lot of interest. Still, the rest of 3D played extremely well. Ron “Rambo” Kim led all scores in the first half with 16 frags on offense with Mikey “Method” So adding 14 frags and a few bomb plants. In the second half Sievers tied Montaner for the overall frag lead on defense with 16.

“Everyone played extremely well,” said Montaner, “I wish we could play mibr right now and not have to wait until tomorrow, the momentum is on our side.”

Montaner was still the center of attention. His play at times was less then stellar, out gunned by Tyndale and Pasha Lari. Even with sluggish play he won multiple big rounds. One of those big rounds was the 8th, where he got two key entry frags going into bombsite B. EG was on a desperation buy, buying what they could in a poor money situation and hoping to pull out a round. Montaner’s two entry frags slammed the door on that as he came out of the halls and got two EG members sitting in the closet area of Bombsite B.

Two rounds later Montaner won a two versus one again in Bombsite B. His second shot was a quick zoom, firing right as the scope zoomed in, and hit a headshot on Tyndale who had stopped 3D’s initial rush.

Even with 3D’s great play with Montaner in the lineup, don’t expect anything to happen. Montaner is signed to Complexity through 2007 according to Jason Lake.

When Montaner was asked to compare Team3D to Complexity he answered with a quick, “No comment.”
